Illuminations Lighting Design has long been regarded as the most qualified, go-to company in Houston for everything pertaining to art and light. Much of this is due to our origins. In the 1980s, we emerged as an art lighting firm whose expertise was focused the superior showcasing of fine art. Over time, our services offerings expanded.
Without ever abandoning our first love of fine art lighting, we began to explore other areas of lighting, such interior home lighting, architectural lighting, landscape lighting, electrical services, and home automation.
This expansion showed us many things about the subtle nuances of interior architecture and decorating and the impact that these often unnoticed forces can have on both art and light. We learned through our expansion into these new realms of service how to perform at an even better level in the arena of our original expertise.
With new awareness of how interior architecture and design affects such things as lighting intensity, angle, and the relationship between light and shadow, our skills in fine art lamp lighting and access to the world’s best equipment are more diverse and powerful than ever before. Also, our awareness of how these two phenomena so closely intertwine themselves at times enables us to deliver value that is unrivaled in our industry.
Art and light share a number of amazingly similar qualities that makes them soul mates when they meet one another in the world of design. For instance, they both depend on spatial relationships to establish their respective aesthetic. Art must depict objects in relationship to one another to be effective in its message. Light, because it occupies space without every consuming space or being directly seen itself, must rely upon the revelation of objects it encounters—and the revelation of the relationships between these objects—to make its presence known in the world.
Art and light depend on one another in very specific ways. Art cannot be seen in the dark, and light lacks evident purpose when it has no subject to illuminate. By bringing the two together, ILD art lighting consultants create a special reality where essence and form converge in layers of color, luminance, and shadow.
For such a display of art and light to truly succeed, there must be some amount of shadow in the room to function as a counterpoint to luminance. Variations in light and layers of light are clearly evidenced by proportions of luminance that overlay lower levels of light or areas of deliberate dark space. In painting, similar depictions of scenes and characters that accentuate color with a skillful blend of light and shadow creates perspective and dimension—two essential qualities that distinguish fine art from run of the mill images of popular culture.
The similarities shared by light and art allow for the creation of complex relationships between the two. When art light fixtures are properly chosen and professionally installed, the result is a multi-dimensional aesthetic that moves the viewer beyond duality into a realm of layered expression and complex, interrelated points of interest on display.
Art lights or picture lights lights are always precisely adjusted to match their beam spread and lighting intensity to the paintings and sculptures they are intended to showcase. Layers of light that are generated within the room fill its space with an ambience that is appropriate to the genre represented by any given collection.
While we might argue that the aesthetics and metaphysics of both art and light are in constant when viewed as universals, we can equally contend that in terms of private art galleries, the expertise of ILD professionals is able to move the sublime to the personal, the objective to the subject. At the end of the day, both the art and light in your private collection will become as much an expression of who you are as the works on display are expressions of the artists themselves.
