It’s a complex skillset
Some folks might think that “art lighting” is easy— clamp an elongated tube-style incandescent fixture to the top of a picture frame, and you’re done, right? Sadly, no; that went out of fashion years ago, right along with button-up shoes.
The technology has advanced from the power-hungry, short-lived incandescents invented in the 1890s, to durable sources that use 1/10th the power, and last tens of thousands of hours longer. It’s only natural that in the previous 120 years that we’ve evolved better systems than overheated wires in a vacuum!
Achieving the Effect
At Illuminations Lighting Design we have grown so far beyond those primitive efforts that light sources are often now invisible or sourceless—it can take a highly trained eye even to locate them. And that is precisely as it should be. The light generally isn’t the art itself (though it most certainly can be as you can see in our beautiful gallery!), and the ancient Latin dictum, Ars est celare artem, still applies. It means “True art conceals how Art is achieved.”
A tiny pico-spotlight (for example) can illuminate a painting with absolutely no spillage of light onto a surrounding wall, or even the frame. This is how galleries achieve the “floating effect.” You become so focused on the art itself that all the background seems to fade away, which is the best way to appreciate art in the first place.
Of course, it applies to statuary, too, such that multi-source light can eliminate stark shadows cast on nearby walls, distracting the eye. It is the same for your bronzes, so there are no untoward reflections or glares, or your ceramics, without nasty highlights that conceal fine details.
Maintenance & Repairs
Let’s imagine that a room needs to be rearranged to suit some new aesthetic. Maybe you’ve obtained a new piece that deserves to be front-and-center. Our team is more than happy to reconfigure your rooms to highlight your acquisitions!
Of course, it’s not impossible that some accident occurred, too—like a youngster flying a quadcopter indoors—and lighting can be knocked out of position. Don’t worry! We can make it right even when it is 20 feet above the floor, or tucked away into an obscure corner. Even if we didn’t install it, we could fix it with our remarkable collection of components onboard each of our well-equipped trucks.
