Feng Shui with LEDs
Feng Shui is a 3,000 year old traditional Chinese art form intended for “balancing the energy” of a physical space—particularly a home. It gained some traction on the West Coast of the United States for a while and although it probably won’t affect your love life, increase your health, or bring you wealth, there is something to be said for a well-executed lighting design which can make your home much more enjoyable.
Your living space should be purpose-lit to suit your needs and preferences. That is why it is always best to enlist the help of a professional lighting designer. Feng Shui may be a bit of a fad, but great lighting design most certainly isn’t.
One of our designers can bring the structural details of your home to life, whether inside or out. They can highlight all the aspects that say so much about you and your refined taste.
Outdoors
Outdoor architectural lighting should be both subtle and hidden. It’s supposed to emphasize arches, columns, stairways, windows, and that amazing flying buttress or cantilever deck. They should never be directed towards observers, and if the sources can be completely concealed and out of sight, the effect is so much stronger.
It doesn’t stop at the building however… If you have spent a great deal of time designing topiary, you don’t want your guests to miss it just because they came over in the evening. Proper lighting can really make it pop. And, of course, if it just happens to be on the far side of a reflecting pool, it’s going to look stunning!
The point is that conventional halogen, mercury vapor, sodium lamps, or even common incandescent floodlights are so energy intensive. Now is not the time to be throwing away money while heating up the great outdoors. Cool LEDs can provide precisely the same color and intensity of light as any of those mentioned above. Why not save up to 90% of the electrical costs and not have to worry about burned out bulbs for at least 10 years?
Indoors
If you want cove lights in the dining room ceiling to provide a frame to set off your gorgeous chandelier, we can do that. If you want a concealed spotlight to highlight a piece of statuary, we can do that, too.
Phantom lighting in your display cases, beneath your kitchen cupboards, and in your library book shelves, can make your home look beautiful and unique. That same phantom lighting can illuminate your home theater, fading to darkness as the presentation begins and slowly comes back up to normal levels without the discomfort of suddenly flipping on bright lights.
Our designers are not only experienced; they are clever, inventive, and happy to share their knowledge. You will be amazed to find out what is possible.
Art
For example, a shaped, shrouded LED light can put precisely the right illumination on a piece of artwork, such as a painting, but completely without the danger of ultraviolet or infrared radiation which can damage the pigments. The remainder of the surrounding area stays completely unaffected by the tightly controlled art illumination.
In addition, no matter how dark or bright the level of ambient light, your art will always be perfectly lit so as to bring out its very best. Art is meant to be enjoyed, not obscured in some shadowy alcove. When it’s properly illuminated it’s the first thing in the room that draws the eye, not something you happen to notice later on. Subtle or bold, our designers can deliver exactly what you want or need to show your personal style.
The Takeaway
Whether you are the second owner, or possess a beautiful, custom-designed home, each one is unique, as is the way you use the space within. Any lighting solution that we provide will take that into account.
This is definitely not a task for amateurs. Achieving a balanced, thoughtful design is never accomplished by approaching it in a haphazard manner. Lighting must flow from one area in to another, and it’s only an extremely rare circumstances where you want a sudden, shocking transition.
Lighting colors must suit the décor. Lighting sources must suit the mood and/or the intended use of the room. There are specific bulbs for using indoors and outdoors (and you’d be amazed how many times people get this wrong).
The simple truth of the matter is doing the job incorrectly is far more expensive than doing it right the first time. Give us a call and we’ll do it perfectly, and we’ll do it right, guaranteed.
We at Illuminations Lighting are delighted to be located in beautiful Houston, Texas, and while we provide service over quite a wide area, we always love to hear from River Oaks, Memorial, West University, Bellaire, Southside, Heights, and Royal Oaks, or whichever part of town you call home…
