We’re into the second century since Thomas Edison first commercialized the electric incandescent light bulb. The tide of progress has not halted it has increased—and modern lighting is not only up to 90% more efficient, but it’s thousands of times more durable.
Progress
Edison was pleased when he could make a single light bulb operate for an entire day without failing. We now create LED light bulbs that sport a Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) of 200,000 hours! When you stop to consider that there are only 8,760 hours in an entire year, that modern bulb could function for an average of 23 years of continuous operation.
If you only operate such a bulb for four hours per day, your grandchildren might still be using it in 136 years… A family heirloom from the previous century! But even if you only insisted on an MTBF of 50,000 hours, you could put one lightbulb in the highest, most inaccessible place in your home or business and never have to worry about changing it again in your lifetime.
So why are we still using ancient technology? Fear of change? Misconceptions about cost? Or maybe it’s the spotty history of early LEDs being too white, or unnatural?
Modern LEDs can provide any part (or blend) of the spectrum, at any desired intensity. With the proper bulb selected, they can even change their colors on-the-fly in response to Wi-Fi signals from a Home Automation system.
LED spots, permanently mounted, or on a track lighting system, lend themselves to illuminating art, whether permanent or continually evolving. The only thing different is that you won’t have to haul out a 10-foot stepladder every thousand hours to change burnt out bulbs!
Our customer Bryn Larsen from has discovered what experience and skill can bring to a renovations product. The Houstonite wrote to us to say:
The Illuminations team did beautiful work in my home, lighting my art collection to perfection and adding adjustable and beautiful lighting throughout the house.
I moved into a builder’s spec house and asked the builder at the time to add specific spot lights—and was told it could not be done without opening up the ceiling and at significant expense. The builder added spots to the overhead switches, but you could never select one or the other because they were connected. I declined to open up the ceilings and was afraid of the expense and mess of the project.
But all was not lost for the Larsen household. Just one phone call to Illuminations Lighting Design and suddenly everything was possible…
However, when I inquired with Illuminations about whether they could make that change, they said “no problem!” Moreover, the job was completed quickly and easily—no ceiling repair.
Goes to show you that the experts know what they are doing and can get the job done right—I wish I had asked them first! I highly recommend them—particularly if you have art to showcase—they did a beautiful job that has added ambiance and atmosphere throughout the house.
And we were thrilled and delighted to be partners with you on this project. As you know, we always strive to create precisely what you need and want, and we are so pleased that you are happy with the result.
