Making it your own!
The Story of a New Home
Who doesn’t love finding the perfect home? We’ll spend weeks or months going from place to place, looking for something that fits our image of perfection.
Finally, you find precisely the right number of bedrooms, a
beautiful spacious kitchen, a fully finished basement, complete with home theater and luxurious seating, and a perfect bar for entertaining close friends.
The main entranceway is two stories tall, and columns grace the exterior. Inside, the floors are done in Breccia marble, looking like delicate bubbles frozen in the stone itself. A Great Room leads to a Dining Hall, where massive windows frame the outdoor reflecting pool and…
…those wretched scraggly hedges, the giant overhanging trees that make your garden look like a haunted forest, and those misbegotten spotlights that blaze directly in your eyes if you look any direction except straight out the windows. Ugh!
Things will have to change
Do you cut the trees down to get some light in your yard? Too drastic! A gardener and an arborist could probably spiff things up quite a bit. You think the last owners didn’t spend any time out here.
Those spotlights will have to go, you decide, but that will make it even darker. Time to call Illuminations Lighting Design, and turn your garden into a showcase comparable to your new home!
The Transformation
So many overhanging branches! Can we turn that into an asset rather than a liability? Of course! Some lightweight, low-voltage LED ball chandeliers would be perfect for an outdoor party—not too bright—but adequate for dancing, eating, and everyday use.
Border lights all around the various flowerbeds would be eye-catching. And how about path lights, so people don’t take a misstep?
The reflecting pool needs some subtle blue or green lighting, or perhaps something that slowly, but continually evolves through the entire spectrum, so it attracts the eyes. The trees, they need some uplights, and those hedges could maybe use some pinpoint colored spotlights.
Even the subtle hills and dales of your garden space could be emphasized with some downlights, too. Yes, while looking at ILD’s Gallery of Outdoor Design, the ideas really start to flow.
Say, maybe the reflecting pool could use a beautifully lit fountain, too! Lighting water features is an ILD speciality, and they always have such great ideas and suggestions. “You know, I think it’s time that I invited them out for a design consultation.”
Besides, the house needs some exterior architectural lighting. The front door columns look great in the daylight, but turn into big black silhouettes and vanish at night. Plus all the eaves could stand a beautiful warm glow to make it inviting. And that basic globe light at the top of the porch would be so much better if it were an oversized carriage lamp on a seven-foot chain.
Yes, I definitely have to call ILD! They’ll know exactly what to do!
