You can live with it, but can you live with it?
There are surprisingly few ways of designing lighting perfectly. Unfortunately, the possibilities for doing a bad job are almost infinite. It doesn’t seem fair, but those are the facts.
One of the clearest signs of imminent disaster is when someone says: “Heyyyy… You know what would look good over there…?” Much as we would like to equate spontaneousness and creativity with talent and artistic flair, the simple fact of the matter is that proper lighting design takes planning.
What is really needed is a clear understanding of the room dimensions, natural light sources (along with daily exposures), the sort of furniture that is going to occupy the room, the room’s actual use, and the variable ceiling heights from location to location. Dining rooms or living rooms with vaulted ceilings have completely different needs compared to your den, trophy room, or your home office, in terms of lighting requirements.
Safety First
That is not the end of it however, because the person doing the layout and design must know what power is available to sustain the design, or whether wiring upgrades will be required. Remember, we folks at Illuminations Lighting are certified electrical installers; we don’t cut corners; we make sure your installation is completely safe and up to code (or higher).
Common Blunders
It is hard to fault a customer for making mistakes when buying LED bulbs at random in stores. In the top part of the image you see how bulbs with different Kelvin Temperatures look when they are lit. Looking at a bare bulb, it is nearly impossible to differentiate other than by brightness. Once you close the camera shutter a bit, the difference becomes quite obvious, and that is the color you are going to get in your environment.
Every Assignment is Unique
Of course they are going to be different in reality, compared to how when you’re looking at a monitor screen that has its own bias already built in, but the human eye, can literally see millions of colors, and the trained human eye, can recognize which ones go together in a complimentary fashion. So, as you can see, design is a lot more complex than you thought.
We Protect you through Knowledge
Our designers know how to pick the correct colors; they know how to select the appropriate fixtures to achieve your lighting goals; and they even know how to avoid the massive influx of cheap 10,000 hour LED lightbulbs that have been flooding the retail market here recently. We only use the high quality, similarly priced bulbs that last 50,000-100,000 hours. There is no advantage to using the short-life, planned-obsolescence LEDs, designed to sustain the “constant replacement” market that bulb manufacturers have relied on since the 1800s.
Most importantly, however, our designers, technicians, and installers know how to make sure the appropriate power supply is available and capable of supporting the design in an Electrical Code Approved manner. This is your home, so it needs to be utterly safe, and that is why you need genuine experts with years of practical experience.
And the proof is in the fact that every year we make it a point to invest in hours of Continuing Education for our technicians, installers, and designers. You won’t find a more knowledgeable crew anywhere. That’s our promise to you.
The Takeaway
There are a lot of reasons that folks might consider undertaking a job like this themselves. On the surface, it doesn’t seem that difficult. There is also the perception that there’s money to be saved.
If all our experience has taught us anything it’s this: It is faster and more cost-efficient for an expert to do the job properly one time than to try to repair something that didn’t meet specifications, goals, or simply failed to satisfy. Let us show you that we are still your best choice! We guarantee it.
