This West University home lighting design project involved the blending of interior living space with outdoor landscape design. The clients live in West University and have a 65 foot lap swimming pool positioned within only a few steps of the sliding doors that lead from their living room. When these doors are opened, the living room floor descends gently onto a narrow patio that stretches along the water’s edge. A row of trees lines the other side of the pool, forming an organic wall that makes it seem as though the pool is part of the interior home design.
In order to complete this unification of indoor and outdoor environments, we had to utilize several layers of interior and exterior garden lighting to create a blend of aesthetics. The pool contractor installed the swimming pool lights themselves. However a number of other structures around the pool required lighting to create the sense of special enclosure. The tree line required up lights that would brightly light the trunks of the trees, then fade mysteriously into the canopy above the ground. This creates a feeling of intimate mystique when viewed from the living room.
At the very end of the pool, and to the left of person’s seating at the threshold of the living room, is a sculpture garden. This sculpture is a superb work of art equivalent to what we would find on the interior of the home. To bring it into the viewer’s field of vision, and to unite it with fine art displays that adorn the walls of the living room, we used a variety of art lighting design methods to bring out the complex aesthetic that characterizes its form.
Moving back into the living room, a number of home lighting layers were then created to blend general room lighting with decorative lighting. There are several types of light along the ceiling, all controlled by a lighting control system that can raise or lower the lights at will. This allows the homeowners to create a variety of moods simply by pushing a hand-held remote. As the Homeworks lighting control system can operate both single fixtures and entire groups of fixtures at a time, it is possible to combine a near infinite pattern of lighting themes simply by adjusting the intensity levels of select fixtures at will.
Of special note here are the framing projectors which you cannot actually see in the picture. These sophisticated devices are actually hidden in the ceiling and project invisible beams of light onto the surfaces of paintings showcased throughout the room. This light is different from typical decorative and general home lighting systems. It is filtered with special equipment to render it completely free of all ultraviolet and infrared light. This makes it safe to shine on canvases and oils that could easily be damaged by invisible light from the extremities of the EM spectrum.
With this innovative indoor/outdoor modern home lighting design, ILD was able to blend the home interior with the pool patio and immediate surroundings into one unified field of entertainment space.
