Illuminations Lighting and Design, a Houston based lighting and electrical contracting firm was recently called upon by the City of Sugar Land to illuminate their commemorative 50th anniversary sculpture. This 5 ½ foot masterpiece created by Austin Texas sculptor Joe Kenney is permanently housed in the foyer of the Sugar Land City Hall. Each of the six bronze panels on the sculpture depicts a scene from Sugar Land history, crowned by the seal of the City of Sugar Land on the top of the pedestal.
One of the distinguishing aspects of this project was that we were able to install a specialized track lighting system without making any alterations or cuts in the ceiling. Using a railing around the perimeter of the room’s upper interior, we were able to mount the system in a rectangular pattern that essentially surrounded the pedestal sculpture from above.
ILD lighting designers symmetrically positioned six 75-watt low-voltage halogen lamps around the track. Each lamp illuminates an individual panel from an optimal angle of incidence that accentuates the relief of the panels with precision lighting effects. Spill light and glare are kept to a minimum by special cube cell louvers engineered for appearance and glare control.
The equipment itself is virtually out of sight, residing almost 30 feet above the display area, just near the ceiling. However, our use of existing interior architecture as a mounting platform makes it easy for maintenance crews to access the equipment anytime necessary.
Lighting sculptures like these are the hallmarks of Illuminations Lighting and Design. Our mission is to place fine art and sculpture in the best possible light with minimum invasiveness to the physical environment. We use the very best fixtures that are designed for precision lighting effects and glare control, and we carefully position them so as to downplay their physical presence, or to conceal them altogether.
We use a variety of fixture types to this end for art lighting. Depending on the nature of the piece, we will custom build track lighting systems or recessed lighting systems. In some cases, very special light is needed for certain paintings and sculptures. For these works, we have access to concealed framing projectors that create magical, proprietary lighting effects.
These projectors can also be used in conjunction with recessed and pedestal lights to illuminate three dimensional standing sculptures, such as that depicting a human figure. The combination of light and shadow such custom lighting systems create accentuates the three-dimensional nature of the piece and prevents the work from appearing “flat.”
In addition to keeping the light focused in just the right amount on various types of art, we also pay careful attention to optimal color rendering, energy efficiency, and lighting filtration that removes UV and IR frequencies that can damage rare and delicate pieces. We call this the art of light.
Sometimes, in collections housing many pieces and several types of art, entire systems are built to create multiple layers of light that can be raised and lowered in brightness by user-friendly controls.
The key to understanding our process flow is to realize that every fine art lighting system that is built and centered around the art itself and that no two systems are ever alike in the generic sense of the term.
Whomever the artist and wherever the artwork is located, you can trust the professionals at Illuminations Lighting Design to design and implement a fine art lighting theme that will showcase your collection in the best possible light on a budget you can afford.
